CBS CRUNCHES GAY DATING AD

mancrunch.com superbowl ad refused by CBS

The real winner is the company that made this ad. They'll get just as much publicity to their target audience, and they don't have to pay the millions for the Super Bowl ad time.

Maybe they're afraid of offending those franchises. :)

CBS made a big mistake by taking the Focus on the Family ad, in the first place and then they compounded it by saying that they would allow other advocacy ads and now, turning down this. I'm not in favor of the ad but geez, CBS made their bed and they're going to have to lie it in.

I still don't buy their stance about how they allowed ads over the healthcare debate as being the same because they're NOT airing during the Super Bowl -- right? They've had ads like that on their network on other shows for years so it's not like they opened it up now. I'd rather watch an ad that entertains than preaches. I wonder if they would air an ad from a group that wants The Who off the halftime festivities because of Pete Townsend.....

If an ad sucking was a criterion for whether Super Bowl ads are accepted, there would be a lot of dead air. Beyond that, I am a gay man and I watch the Super Bowl every year. I watch it in a gay bar with hundreds of other gay football fans. So, no, we are all not hanging out at the beauty salon getting pedicures on Super Bowl Sunday.

WHEN THE SAINTS COME MARCHING IN

While everyone is feeling bad for Favre and the Vikings, consider what the Saints did right throughout the game - it was the little things. The Saints defense kept the heat on Favre all night, hitting him relentlessly even on running plays- that had a cumulative effect on him. The secondary for the Saints while giving up 300 yards, did not give up long pass plays and the DB's harassed the receivers all game.

The Saint defense also did an outstanding job of stripping the ball from ball carriers and receivers - Jonathan Vilma may be the most underrated LB in the NFL ( 1 int, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 6 tackles, 2 passes defensed) , he played smarter than anyone else on the field last night. Also, the Saints offensive line allowed the top sacking defense to only one sack in the game and largely kept Allen, Edwards and Williams off Brees.

All that was key, but there was one facet of the game that none of you talk about that the Saints won altogether and going away and that was on special teams. Morestead punted the Vikings down inside the twenty numerous times and let's not forget that at the second half kickoff, Roby takes the ball 60 yards to create a short field. Also, the Saints did not allow for any return yards on punts and the kickoffs were mostly touchbacks - again it may not seem like much, but the difference of starting at the 20 vs the 35 is huge.

Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints, the City of New Orleans and their long suffering fans. This was a long time coming - savor it and don't let anyone tell you that you lucked out or that Minnesota deserved to win the game. They did not deserve to win the game, the Saints did... they scored three more points than the Vikings.

TWO MEN AND A SHOW -- MAKING WAVES WITH THE LENO-O'BRIEN FEUD

Jay Leno

Jerry Seinfeld is right: NBC had the guts to try something innovative. I agree. Then again, anyone with half a brain would have known that, though an interesting idea and all, it was never going to be sustainable.

Yeah, they got an uptick when the show launched and Leno is a good performer but can you really say with confidence that you'd watch him in prime time for longer than say, three nanoseconds? I tried one time and lasted 2 of them - nice guy, good sense of humor, good performer but of all the choices in the world that NBC has to choose from this would have been (and should have been) on the bottom of the list.

The bad news is that NBC executives are now going to be less inclined to try anything new and innovative - they needed to try something that was a dead ringer first, then step out with a beta test and see how it goes (past the first week). Bad choice that will step all over innovation in that culture.

My idea would be to shuttle Leno off for a syndicated show on old cars, and leave O'Brien the "Tonight Show" in its time-honored format. That way, Leno's happy, because he never shuts up about his old cars anyway, O'Brien's happy, because he's getting to do the job he was promised, and we're happy, because Leno will be impossible to find on cable and we won't have to listen to his tired jokes and pathetic attempts to come up with three riffs on each of their punchlines.

Conan O'Brien

NBC's problem is that it's late night shows appeal to an older crowd, and will continue to grow older. Late Night has lost ground - a LOT of ground - with younger viewers to Cable (The Daily Show, Colbert, Adult Swim, etc.)

During the writers' strike - that seems oh so long ago, doesn't it? - many viewers of Stewart and Colbert's shows were introduced to Conan in earnest for the first time. I found him hilarious, if not on at an ungodly hour. You see, after The Daily Show and Colbert, I go straight to bed (Hey! Maybe there's something to that habit theory after all!). In sum, all Conan needs is time. He DOES appeal to people in their early-20s (such as myself). He just needs consistency at a good time-slot. NBC is messing up big time by forcing him out.

SANDRA BULLOCK'S SHINING HOUR

Once upon a time Hollywood’s principal movie concern was to produce films with morale and moral value. They were movies that charmed people’s spirits and moved their souls. When a person left the theater he or she felt truly “born again” and lifted up out of a quagmire of pride and prejudice and even some worse human follies.

Now along comes a wonderful movie of the “old fashioned” Hollywood genre with an great actress whose heart is full of good will, good intentions and good faith, and what most of the people on these forums want to talk about is what the movie has done for women. Excuse me, but I believe that the plot of this movie was about a wonderful family sparing themselves to share what they had with someone from the unfortunate low end of society and sticking with it until their helping hand had truly helped.

Thank you Sandra Bullock, precious lady and marvelous actress, for your great work in this movie, which moved me to tears. I firmly believe that you should receive this year’s Oscar for Best Actress. Since this movie has now broken the $200 million box office receipts, I feel it safe to speculate that it’s the “Great Silent Majority” responsible for this success and they feel the same way that I do.

She seems like a down to earth good person just trying to live a good life. She doesn't seem caught up in the whole Hollywood game at all. She's a wife and dedicated step-mom who just happens to be an actress and that's the way it should be. All those other A-listers could take a Cue from Ms. Bullock! I hope she gets the Oscar!

ALL STEAMED UP ABOUT "JERSEY SHORE"

Jersey Shore, MTV Series

I've heard both sides of the argument here. I happen to think the premise of this show is stupid, offensive and juvenile. MTV wouldn't dare do a "Ghetto Crowd" show depicting twenty-something hip-hoppers from the projects. Why? Because it would be racist and offensive! So why is this okay?

It's NOT how Italian-Americans live, not how a majority of visitors behave at the Jersey Shore (yes, there is an abundance of idiots like these, but they're not only Italian) and this not only makes Italian-Americans look bad, it makes the Jersey Shore look bad.

To whom? To anyone that doesn't know any better!! Like people in the Midwest who've never been to the Jersey Shore! Like people from Idaho (for example) who don't know what a real New Jersey second-generation Italian-American family is all about. If this program remains on MTV, I'll expect to see the "Ghetto Crowd" show to be airing immediately after.

Oh, and for the record, I DO live at the Jersey Shore, and I AM an Italian-American and DAMNED PROUD OF IT!

BRITTANY MURPHY: A STAR, TRAGICALLY INTERRUPTED

Does the cause matter? Does the famous name mean her death is all the more welcome to dissection and criticism? Or is it fuel for fodder to incite the wagging tongues to bark in unison versus taking a moment to recognize that she did not go quietly into that dark night, that instead her final moments were probably filled with pain and fright and she leaves in her wake loved ones who will always feel the loss of her in their lives... is it at all possible to bid adieu to a stranger who obviously made an impact in your very short time in this life, with a modicum of warmth and humanity?
