VONN-TASTIC! -- WINNINGEST WOMAN AT WHISTLER DOWNHILL

NBC MEDAL CEREMONY

Considering the awful conditions of this run, which was being described by commentators as both bumpy and as hard as cement and, thus, extremely fast, plus the number of skiers falling (a couple of them when coming out of the final jump near the finish line before and after Lindsey's run), it was quite a feat and amazing performance that Lindsey even got down it much less finishing first. Kudos to her. She definitely deserves the gold for this performance.

These are smart, talented, dedicated women who will do more in a year than couch potatoes who yammer about "global understanding and world peace"
will accomplish in their whole lives.

Mancuso, Vonn, White are more than athletes -- they're ambitious entrepreneurs who are setting examples for their generation that hard work can pay off in sports and in life -- the very essence of the American dream.

They're building businesses, employing people, leading charitable causes and spreading a doctrine of wholesomeness that presents capitalism and competition combined with fun and leadership.

For too long Americans have looked to professional team athletes for entertainment and inspiration, but these kids offer valuable alternatives and we'd do well to watch them and cheer them on, not complain about how they're unable to solve problems that befuddle whole governments.

Their lives are centered on games but they're building a whole career around their sports, one step at a time. They're the best of the American spirit, not just American sport, and they deserve our praise and admiration.

VANCOUVER 2010: TRAGEDY ON THE ICE

Whistler Sliding Center, (C) VANOC/COVAN

I think everybody agrees that the accident was a tragedy. My thoughts and prayers go out to the friends and family of this athlete.

A high percentage of the winter olympics evenst are beyond comprehension for many of us. These athletes are "dare-devils". The athletes are also adults and understand the risks inherant in these events. The athletes need to be held accountable for their actions.

A miscalculation by a snow boarder in the half pipe, a ski jumper in various ski-jumping competitions, a skier going 100mph on the GS course, etc... can cause death. Just because the IOC tried to make the course safer, doesn't mean the IOC is to blame for this tragedy and is avoiding accountability.

"The International Luge Federation has blamed the crash on the luger and not on any "deficiencies in the track," saying that Mr. Kumaritashvili "did not compensate properly to make the correct entrance" into the curve where he slid off the track at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Despite those assertions, Olympic officials took unusual measures on Saturday to shorten the course by 190 yards to slow the speeds, and they altered the run to keep lugers on the track should they crash."

Isn't that what you would expect in 2010? A denial followed by changing the very thing just denied!

Anyone that looked at the pictures of that track, near where Nodar Kumaritashvili left it can see a series of vertical steel beams directly above the wall, which appears to be less than 4 feet tall!

Clearly a dangerous design! (let's see I am traveling at 90 MPH, I am launched above 4 feet, and I can hit up to 6 steel beams?)

First by their very action to reduce the speed of the track (by shortening it) the Olympic Commission admitted the error!

Second by blaming the Luger and NOT THE TRACK, the International Luge Federation shows they are nothing more than a group of liars!

OLYMPIC PRIDE SHINES ON VANCOUVER

As I sat and watched the crowd arrive to view the torch relay yesterday, I was in awe of how this event has grabbed our hearts.

Everyone had something red, or "Canadian" on. People waved flags, or even wore them. The children were so happy with their flags., Lots of people had painted faces, Canada scarves, and of course, the red mittens. Seeing the torch was almost anitclimactic to watching the people.

Go Canada, eh.

If Canada wins Gold in Skiing or Speedskating or Mogals that will be great but it's the Gold in Men's Hockey that Canadian's want. Hockey is CANADA'S GAME and the Canadian public are expecting GOLD in 2010. Anything less will be a major disappointment.

Canada had not won Olympic GOLD in mens hockey for 50 YEARS until Wayne Gretzky put together HIS TEAM who won GOLD in Salt Lake City in 2002.

Wayne Gretzky is a Canadian Legend who is known world wide even by people that don't follow sports. He is not called "The Great One" for nothing.

These are Canada's Olympics, Hockey is Canada's Game and nobody has done more for Canada's Game then Wayne Gretzky.

JUDGING ELLEN: IDOL FANS HAVE THEIR SAY

At first I thought Ellen was an odd choice for this role, even though I really like her. She’s not a musician.

…But then I realized, Simon is not a musician, either. He’s a glorified talent scout and TV personality. I think he’s written a few songs here and there. And then you have Kara and Randy who aren’t exactly solo artists, but they’re trained musicians and know the industry. The know the technical stuff.

What Ellen knows is: Talent. Talent, stage presence, the “what-it-takes” factor. She was a young stand-up comic struggling at one point. She’s been judged by her performances. I think, therefore, Ellen is qualified to be a judge.

The show itself is kind of an overblown high school talent contest. Most of the singers, like last season's winner, are blah at best. If Ellen can keep to being quick and honest, and not make stupid jokes about herself like she does on her talk show, she might improve the judging a bit. Frequently the judges rave over people I think aren't very good, and dump people I like. Last night I think they got rid of some clunkers who I couldn't believe made it thru the first auditions.

I love Ellen DeGeneres.... She is a breath of fresh air and a kind soul. I think she will add allot to a show that was stagnant at best. You are doing great Ellen.

To all you Ellen haters; I think the world would be a better place if we had more people with the giving spirit toward their fellow man like Ellen has. Oh yea I am a right wing Libertarian TEA party person so please don't give me the liberal stuff. Ellen is a good person.

What an amazing, amazing night.

We had no streets to flood into, no strangers to hug at 6 a.m , but Kampala, Uganda, cheered for and celebrated with the Saints last night. To see my hometown erupt in long-overdue joy brought tears to my eyes... only wish I was there to be part of something, part of an emotion, that will stand still in time. Never again will any city feel what we've felt. It is more than football, and those boys knew it. Viva, New Orleans, Viva.

Love and longing from uganda... WHO DAT!

"I AM OZZY...AND I STILL HAVE NAUGHTY THOUGHTS"

Ozzy Osbourne inducted into the Birmingham 'Walk of Stars', Kaiserjr. Wikipedia Commons

I have tons of respect for anyone who is willing to take responsibility for their own actions (a very rare trait this day and age) and express regret for past wrongs.

Ozzy has been directly responsible for bringing happiness to his multitude of fans over the years. I’m thrilled he didn’t OD or kill himself (or anyone else) in some drunken rage or driving! He’s made it through the hell he created for himself and come out the other side - alive, well and still entertaining millions!

Some of you are calling yourself Christians - are you not taught to express tolerance and forgiveness? I was! All I see is judgmental people making derogatory comments, how about practicing what you preach. Or as my dad used to say: “clean up your own backyard before commenting on others”.

Thank you Ozzy for many years of entertainment!

I do NOT like Ozzy, his family, his beliefs, etc. I will not be reading his book. I will not be, and haven't watched any reality show involving him or his family. I do not listen to his "music." Why do you ask? Because it is my choice. I chose to not associate with his kind in any way, form or fashion.

The only other thing I want to say to everyone who has condemned Ozzy to hades is "Judge not lest thy be judged." It isn't our place to judge another no matter what our faith is. If we all worry more about ourselves and our own choices the world wouldn't be as controversial.

For those of you who haven't seen the biography of Ozzy's life, Ozzy grew up below the poverty line in England with his parents and several siblings. He was the laughing stock of his school because he was considered a "dummy" and fell way behind his classmates. He was beat up on a daily basis. Ozzy dropped out and turned to music as his only solace. Today we know he was extremely learning disabled.

Due to his extreme emotional trauma, Ozzy became much of what he is today. While you can't excuse it all, I can understand why a lot of it happened. There was no help for Ozzy as a child and he survived the best way he could and that way was not the best. It's a testament to his strength that he is still here and alive and now telling the world of his mistakes. Not many men are man enough to do that.

GRIPING ABOUT THE GRAMMYS -- "GIVE HER A BREAK, WILL YA?"

Taylor Swift at the premiere for Hannah Montana: The Movie. Photo Angela George, Wikipedia via Flickr

I agree that Taylor Swift has a lot of trouble singing live [most people with a tin ear do] but I believe she is an exceptional songwriter. She does exactly what songwriting is supposed to do, take real-life situations and make everybody feel it. True, she writes about young love, fairy tales and the like but I am 53 years old and her song "Fifteen" brings me right back to my first couple of years in high school. Will the song change the world? Probabky not but it can bring a tear and smile to anyone and everyone whose lived through those days of saying bye-bye to childhood and hello to adolesence.Give her a break, will ya?

The Grammy awards are chosen by a professional organization of people all of whom are in fields directly related to the creative or technical process of producing recordings.

None of these awards was for the performer who wandered off key the least during a live performance. They were all given for activities directly related to the creative or technical process of producing recordings.

There is another point. Most people are not buying copies of music these days, but stealing them because it is so easy to violate copywrite laws these days. In an environment where many people are seeing their incomes disappear due to this grass roots piracy, we can hardly fault industry professionals who reward the fans who are actually paying for their recordings. Seen in that light, a producer who votes for a record because a lot of people bought copies of it may be actually rewarding those who did the right thing in the only way he can.
