Glory, Glory Rory McIlroy

It's not so much the tributes being paid to Rory, but rather the people who are making them that strikes me as being profound. When a man like Jack Nicklaus speaks in such superlatives, it's a pretty good indicator that McIlroy is special!
This is surely the golden age of Irish golf, long may it continue!

You can't not like this kid. When was the last time you heard a professional athlete speaking with both intelligence and humility after what must have been a devastating loss at the Masters?
One can't help but contrast McIlroy's attitude and remarks with Lebron James post NBA Finals rant. Mr. James came across as spiteful, unsophisticated, and incredibly wealthy man for whom it was "all about me."
For those of us that love the game, the purity of this kid's stroke is something to behold. Different than the tightly wound Woods, be equally inspiring.
May this be the beginning of the McIlroy era in professional golf.

I think it should be pointed out a telling difference between Rory and Tiger.
Woods would use his antics around the green, staged, to compliment his incredible talents with McIlroy using only 'his' talents.
Woods is great, don't get me wrong. Amazing comes to mind. But he relied on the 'Tiger roar' with these green side antics to get into the heads of his competitors, besides being pretty darn rude to those in his three- and two-somes who had to try and concentrate on their next shot.
He used this behavior on the greens to egg on so many of those behind the rope lines to carry on like party animals, most of those screaming "Get in the hole" dumped out of bowling alleys and onto golf courses when the oversized club head arrived during the early and mid nineties. Current club heads measure 460cc's versus the 285cc persimmon heads( a hard wood) used by club makers prior to the nineties.

He seems to have learned to much from Augusta in terms of mental strength - when you saw him bent double over his driver after hooking his tee-shot into the trees on Augusta's 13th you'd never have thought he'd bounce back to this effect. Not only to win the US but in the way he did it.
His balance is so impressive its ridiculous. No other player holds the finish for so long, he's in complete control. Now he's got his head together, he'll win loads of majors.
Great to see Sergio back as well by the way, thought he played great. That birdie on saturday from the trees was great!

Rather premature to be "crowning such accolades and comparisons on this talented lad. Michelson and Verplank won PGA tournaments as amateurs and Crenshaw won his first PGA tour event. Seve won 4 majors, Faldo 6, Michelson 4..stellar careers all, but given the depth of fields, the young talent ( Charl, Luis, Jason etal..) - making such comments is "rash" a shows little respect for the amazing accomplishments of Jack and Tiger. Hundreds of players have the talent, but to be mentally wired to compete for decades is a far different story.

Stanley Cup: The Victors and the Vanquished

Congrats to the Boston Bruins and all their fans!!
Vancouver clearly ran out of steam and failed to keep their "best team of the regular season" thing going at all in this series. Winning 3 games against Boston by only 1 goal each time is nothing to brag about and a few of their players(especially Luongo) shot their mouths off which can only be embarrassing this morning and stupid.
There is only one thing that bothers me about this series and has bothered me before in other past Stanley Cup finals....the referees. During the regular season it appears the NHL and referees say this and that is NOT allowed but in Stanley Cup playoffs, especially the finals, this and that WILL be allowed. There was an awful lot of slashing incidents on Canuck players by Bruins players...no calls. 2nd period last night, Canucks Hansen was high sticked drawing blood which should have been a 4 min penalty against Boston but no call. Instead, Hansen got the penalty for retaliation. Anyways, no diff to the game....Boston would have won anyways!!..just saying NHL reffing sucks so many times!
Lastly, would everyone in the media(both Canadian and American) stop saying Canada is weeping today! This is the NHL, not some nation vs nation Olympic thing...16 Bruins players are Canadian anyways....and the Bruins actually have lots of fans up here!...Vancouver is not "Canada's team".

This is a big deal. The last time this happened it was Nixon's first term. Kevin White was one of the youngest mayor's of an American major city. It was a month before Watergate. Let's enjoy this moment. Hopefully it won't be another 40 seasons.
However next year when Pittsburgh gets back it's superstars from inuries and Detroit and San Jose get their act together it might not be as easy
.I think this Bruins team played with more heart than the Bruin's teams of 40 years ago. Especially Thomas. He set a great example of never giving up or believing in the ones who tell you that you can't achieve.

I was a college freshman and junior when the Bruins last won the Cup, and actually had the good fortune to see a playoff win at the old Garden. Left for Cali right after graduation and have been on the left coast since.
Celebrating all teams Boston, win or lose, for the past 38 years in Cali has often been a challenge, but the true diehards out here are something to behold! Seeing all of the young faces in the Boston streets and bars was terrific. I'd like to say to the generations of younger fans of all Boston teams that I hope that they become and remain true Boston diehards and remember that the true test of a real fan come not when cups and trophies are hoisted and parades are given
( although those are the sweetest moments), but when the team is a bit down and dedication and, dare I say it, real affection, are what's needed. Here's to all the diehard Bruin fans whose black and gold gear is decades old, and to those who have new gear with the tags still attached! Go Bruins (and please don't make it such a long wait for the next one)!

Last night I was shocked and disgusted right from the beginning of the game until i finally turned off the coverage of the riots. Right from the outset... Canucks fans were booing the US National Anthem, and then all the way through to the cup presentation, and Conn Smythe Trophy presentation more booing (except Gary Betman... that booing was OK)... Let me be clear... I am a proud Canadian and was cheering for the Canucks but by the end of the game and evening I was ashamed of the Vancouver Fans who tarnished their own name and mistreated a team that won the game fair and square and then disgraced their own city in the eyes of the world.... SHAME ON YOU to those who acted like children!!!

Seriously people, get a grip! This is a disgusting action by a small amount of social deviants. I too am embarassed and ashamed of what has transpired. But, you simply CANNOT lump all of Vancouver into the category of blame. It is not the true fans that did this either.
I can't believe what I'm reading here. Remove the team? Blame all Vancouverites and BC'ers? Give your head a shake and get a life. Besides, I bet if you were to actually catch all the people burning cars, fighting, rioting, and looting you will find that they are from all over this country....yes even you your home town that you are looking down at us from.

Congrats to the Bruins! Especially Thomas, Bergeron, Ryder, Peverley and Kaberle. As well, what a way for Recchi to finish his career.
In this one game, winner take all, the Nucks best players could not elevate their game while more of the B’s were better. The officiating was consistent in its inconsistency and Vancouver had a few more plays to argue calls than Boston. Yet, when you don’t score on the PP and are scored against in the biggest game of your careers, there isn’t much to say. Luongo was not great but with the absence of offense, how can he be singled out for blame.
Final observation, I maintain the Cup was Vancouver’s to lose after going up 2-0. If the Nucks had just stuck to their game plan employing their speed advantage, the series should’ve been over in 5 or 6. The antics of Lapierre and Burrows, then the hit on Horton, gave the B’s the motivational rallying point. The lax officiating (including not penalizing the Burrows bite), played into the Bruins game, turning it into a street fight which Vancouver was ill prepared to counter. Where were the likes of Lapierre, Burrows, Torres, Bieksa, and Kesler, in the oppositions home turf. None of them showed up to push back when the Sedins were taking a load of punishment?
Well, the Nucks will have the summer to think about such things, but not to lose heart VanFans cause I think they’ll get another chance with this team.
Btw, class act by Nucks fans at the end of the game!!! Not so much out on the streets. Hopefully, no one gets seriously injured!

"The Book of Mormon" Sweeps Tonys

So thrilled about the awards and accolades for TBOM!
Have been a South Park fan since the beginning. Anyone who knows South Park, knows that its got lots of crazy, irreverent and downright offensive stuff going on. But they are masters of satire, and manage to integrate the positive alongside the cussing and toilet humor. The Book of Mormon is the proof that they are more than just a one trick pony.
How unfortunate for the closed minds out there, who turn off their brains and their powers of reason as soon as they hear anything that threatens to topple their delicate house of moral cards.
The songs in the show tell the story, if people would just take the time to listen from beginning to end.
The show has a very positive, uplifting overall message. That some folks might miss or ignore that fact, instead choosing to wring their hands in a show of faux, fabricated outrage, well.....it's their loss.
And it's funny as hell. Win/Win.

Latter-day Saints (Mormon is a just nickname that comes from the book of the same name) do have a sense of humor and it doesn’t concern me that they have done a play on The Book of Mormon.
I just hope nobody gets the wrong impression about what members are really about and realize that this irreverent play is just Matt Stone and Trey Parker goofing around.
From what I have heard, it sounds quite offensive, but I’m not going to get upset over something that I can’t do anything about and ultimately will not matter in the long run.

Alphabet Scoop: Katie Couric from CBS to ABC

Bad idea. Then again, it was a REALLY bad idea to have her as the female anchor of an evening news program. She never really had the gravitas to fit into that mold
And if she does go to ABC, Katie will have made the rounds of the old-school Big 3 Networks. Way to spread yourself around, Katie.
Oh - and there's NO WAY IN HELL she's "the next Oprah". That's one thing we DON'T need is another Oprah. I do hope that "network" just disappears.

To everyone posting negative or defamatory comments: What the heck is your problem? Are you people incapable of forming and articulating adult opinions?
You don't like her, that's fine. I have always thought the world of Katie, and I will even say that her turn on The CBS Nightly News was a bad career move. She always fit better as a cheeky, cheerful morning personality, and her turn on The Today Show (which made her one of the most popular celebrities in her field) proves that she can be great on TV.
So she made a bad career move with the nightly news on CBS, so what? How many of us have made poor career choices from time-to-time? Would we all want to be judged the way some of you are judging her? If you have something negative to say about the content of the article, the style in which it was written and/or edited, or about how Katie presents herself, then by all means spit it out. This is a message board, after all. But please, do the rest of us adults here a favor and actually conduct yourself with some dignity.

It took years for Oprah to build an audience, she didn't come out of the gate a big star. Does the network or the public have the patience for Couric to hit her stride? The other advantage that Ofra had was that a large percentage of women could identify with her. From the yo-yo dieting to the underprivileged and abusive childhood the Peg Bundys (plus 100lbs) could sit and have their pity parties every afternoon. Besides the tragic death of her husband Couric doesn't really have an impoverished background or even a Lara Logan war story going for her. ABC is gonna have to give away a ton of cars for this to work.

Heard her say how she's going to format her show with current events and slice of life stories and I nearly nodded off. I'll bet the stations in NY and Philly aren't pleased about losing their extra hour of news as that is straight income for them but with her arrival the network will get the lion's share once again. I don't think she has the drawing power of an Oprah and I'll bet the other reporters at ABC view her as a rival, that she will get the plums stories to keep in the public eye and to up her stock with the network. I was wondering though if they'll use her to fill in for Diane Sawyer on the evening news? I prefer George.

Oprah's Goodbye -- Kisses and Hisses for the Talk-Show Queen

The hate displayed here is just the sort of thing Oprah has fought against so
valiantly all her life! To call her a racist is ugly, hateful, and a total lie!
She has given away so much to people of all colors, faiths, and creeds! Why be
so mean and dance upon the already broken hearts of those who have found meaning
in existence through Oprah's show and all she has done for them? I probably
would not have read "A Million Little Pieces" or voted in the last election if
Oprah had not worked so hard to encourage me.
Sometimes it seemed she could look
into my soul and connect with me in a way no one else ever has. She is a very
special person and without her show millions and millions of people would have
had no inspiration in their lives. Oprah taught us to love, to read, to laugh,
to cry. She deserves our undying gratitude and ovations here for all she has
done!
Someday I pray I can meet her in person and thank her with all my heart. I
have written many letters and she has sometimes taken time from her busy
schedule to reply with a postcard. Not many people do that kind of thing anymore
except my dear departed mother. She used to.
Oprah has lifted us up to her own
level so many times and allowed us to share her joy in life. Those who can't
understand what she has meant to America are to be pitied for their pathetic
tiny minds and even more miniscule hearts!!!

constantly have my nose in some book.
Also, I love how Oprah shares her wealth
with folks at her show by giving away cars and other stuff. She is the most
generous person on the planet. But she is the most generous with herself and
seems to be always sharing a story about how she has gone some fancy place or
built another lovely home. I hope she is happy in the years ahead because nobody

One of the underlying messages the mainstream media promote is that the entire
country is like minded when it comes to celebrities.
If you are an Oprah devotee
you have probably bought into the consumer ethic which the media so relentlessly
strive to instill in their audience. It is why the media exist. Evidently, Oprah
was a great pitch person for rabid commercialism. That’s the void they’re
talking about.
In reality, the Oprah show was just a major player in the vast
wasteland that is commercial television. It’s heartening to know that most

I am a black female and don't get it. Why are these people putting so much faith
in this woman? She appears to have all the answers for a happy marriage, but has
never been married. She appears to have all the answers for child rearing, but
has not children. She appears to be so health conscious, but struggles with her
own weight issues.
Don't be fooled, I've seen her type; a victim of sexual
abused who craves to be the center of attention at all times. Instead of being
sexual permissive, she gets her gratification from manipulating the lives
others.
Look at her Gayle, she wasn't satisfied until she pulled Gayle down to
her level. I sure she played a part in the demise of her marriage. She is
selfish, self-centered and in the end everything she does will benefit Oprah.
She needs therapy and needs to learn how to be happy in her own life without the
need of controlling others. It's time for her to leave daytime TV and stop
brainwashing those who can't see here for what she is.
Someone needs to let her
know it's not all about her and people need to live their own lives. And the
biggest revelation, money can't buy you happiness, because if you really take a
close look. Oprah is not a happy person, just someone who wears a mask and puts
up a good front.

I believe Oprah is generally sincere. But I also found the cult of personality thing really obnoxious. It's as if no one could make simple decisions about their lives unless Oprah endorsed it, usually in the form of episodes that sometimes resembled infomercials.
Thanks to Oprah, people apparently discovered compassion, books, various weight loss programs, "best things ever," favorite quotes, personal "journeys" and "aha moments," and even more reasons to love celebrities who didn't need the sucking up.
Talk shows exist to promote the host as much as the guests. But Oprah bothered me because, too often, it was crass commercialism packaged as self help you couldn't live without. Sounds crazy, but I think we'll be okay.

I never liked her shows where she interviews famous people from Hollywood, or those shows where she gave gifts away. But her shows about social issues were extraordinary. They provided information, compassion, and more sources for people to contact, consult. If you, quite by accident, only came across the show when she was giving away a car, you never really got to know why Oprah was so appreciated.
Some people watch her, not because they have too much time/money, but because they are doing something extremely routine & boring that requires multi-tasking to keep them from quitting; some people watch because they are home & disabled, and maybe they've been reading, crafting all morning. Oprah brings the world into your house, and some people are very lonely. Some people only watch Oprah when they are interested in the topic; many people learned what else to pursue because of what they learned on her show.

Some in this comment thread would say that anyone who gets their ideas from TV, especially TV like the Oprah Winfrey Show is ignorant. That may or may not be true but one thing is true:
Oprah and her producers figured out a long time ago that a lot of people watch TV and if they could produce the kind of show that those people wanted to watch, they'd watch it. This simple calculation has made Oprah one of the wealthiest women on earth.
It's very much like Google and Facebook figuring out how to monetize their large user base AFTER they accumulated the large user base. Oprah built a show people wanted to watch, then later figured out a way to link it to products (books, etc.).
I don't watch much TV and I've never watched Oprah's show but I'm well aware of Oprah's media empire, the Oxygen network, her publications, etc. She also has great taste in real estate: what she owns in Chicago is spectacular. If Oprah were a publicly traded company her stock would be a hot commodity.
There's no denying that Oprah as a media and cultural force belongs in the first hour of On Point and those who think this is low brow material and not newsworthy need to get their heads out of The Nation and consider the channels other people are getting their information from.

I used to read all sorts of magazines- Cosmo (UK and US), Elle, Redbook, Glamour, Grazia, heat, Company and New Woman. And I can safely say that O blows them all out of the water. In terms of a high quality magazine for women who want more than lame advice on pleasing a man, or rubbish quizzes that let you know you're stressed, O has no equal. I subscribe to it, and it is one of the things I really look forward to getting in the mail.
What I like about Oprah, is that she's understood that while she has amassed all this wealth and power, she now has a responsibility. And she takes that responsibility very seriously indeed. It amazes me how generous she is. And unlike with others who are wealthy, people don't seem to begrudge her being so rich. They just seem to get caught up in her enthusiasm.
But what also amazes me about Oprah, is that for someone who is so much in the public eye, the public know very little about her. She appears to be so open and honest about everything (which I'm sure she is), but the public know only what SHE wants us to know. Nothing more. She has managed her image in a way other celebrities only dream of doing. The amount and the level of control she has managed to maintain is really quite incredible.
I wish I could have seen these final shows as I'm sure they've been as spectacular as she wanted them to be. But at least I have next month's issue of O to look forward to.

And even better, she's doing great work promoting colorectal cancer screening.
