JULY 19, 2010 -- AUGUST 1, 2010
Those of you so vociferously complaining about this being non-news are proving that it is, in fact, newsworthy. Read the article CBC/Lindsay Lohan surrenders in L.A. <> A spoiled brat 'famous' person that gets special treatment and she creates her own havoc. I'm disgusted with her antics as well as those of other 'celebrities'. A some point, she probably worked hard for her fame, but the money and fame also may be what is taking her down. Grow up girl and stop looking for that negative attention you seem to crave. Her so called prison time SHOULD be spent with the rest of the population just so she can get a taste of what her life could become if she doesn't straighten out. I have absolutely no sympathy for this young girl. Read the article ABC NEWS/Lindsay Lohan booked; could find out jail release date today <> Please stop calling it prison! It is the county jail and yes there are some pretty rough county jails but in no way is this prison! She should have to complete the full 90 days. Then a full 90 days in rehab. I truly want this girl to get help but it angers me that she has the ability to pay and get help but she chooses not too. They are those out there that want help but due to the lack of funds struggle to get their lives back on track,,,,,some make it some don't and that is often because there is no one to give them moral, emotional and financial support. This girl does have it all available to her but she does not care. It is sad to see a wasted life whether famous or just your average Joe! Read the article ABC NEWS/Lindsay Lohan booked; could find out jail release date today THE BOSS: "HE NEVER STOPPED TRYING" YANKEES OFFICIAL PHOTO GALLERY Man was decades ahead of Giuliani in cleaning up New York. Read the article NEW YORK TIMES/George Steinbrenner, who built Yankees into powerhouse
No philosophizing here about the game of baseball, which has evolved, if anything, too much in sync with the rest of the world. I only want to say I liked George Steinbrenner from the outset and always said so. All that magnificent turbulence. You want to criticize him, fine, what could be easier? He wasn't put on this earth to make the rest of the world happy. Just us Yankees fans. Read the article NEW YORK TIMES/George Steinbrenner, who built Yankees into powerhouse
As a Red Sox fan I thought that George was bad for baseball, until I woke up and realized that he and Marvin Miller brought baseball kicking and screaming into the 20th century. George was a lot of things. He was arrogant, viewed as a bully, opinionated, brash, outspoken, but he genuinely cared about the Yankees and their loyal fans. He made a lot of money, but put much of that back into the product. As for the earlier comment about his firing of Billy Martin, that's only part of the story. Billy's been fired, re-hired, and fired yet again. This in only a few short hours. Read the articleNEW YORK POST/George Steinbrenner has died at 80
Sure he did a lot of good off the field, but people seem to be ignorant or forget the fact that Steinbrenner outpriced baseball for the majority of Americans. Free agency started in 1975 and since then he has continually pushed the bar higher with new record deals. He started treating baseball players like immortals and paid them like gods. He helped dissipate the true foundations of a beautiful sport. People call him passionate, but I call him selfish when it comes to the game. For him, it was always "I want, I want, I want" and he would whine if he didn't get his way. The average person couldn't get away with this, but his money made up for his behavior. If you ask me, he did more bad than good for baseball. Read the article BOSTON GLOBE/Actually, there was a lot to like
JULY 5, 2010 -- JULY 18, 2010 THE HEAT IS ON FOR LEBRON JAMES
After years of service to a team and a community, pro athletes are routinely dismissed (traded, cut et al) by their Owners, who then deflect any criticism by saying/reasoning "It's What's best for the team"... It was a business decision... In short, shut up, It's my money, I run this show, move-on, case closed!
Read the article HUFFINGTON POST/LeBron James "Narcissistic,' 'deserted' Cleveland, says Cavs major owner <> Sad day for the Bulls. We got jilted by the top 3 free agents. Sad day for Ohio as well because they lost their economic engine and superstar attraction. Sad day for Toronto, they lost their star. Great day for Miami. And time for many teams to sober up and face reality;... Credit Riley and Wade who insidiously made this happen for the unlikeliest town of all 4 destinations. They were shrewd and calculating, sleuthful and tight-lipped. And they executed their plan in stealth-like fashion. We were all clueless "witnesses". I just wish they wouldn't have held everyone hostage for so long. But that maneuver or "manure" has the stench of Pat "Wriley" all over it. I believe Wade, Bosh and Lebron have been on the same page since the playoffs. As all three failed miserably they entered into league with each other to alleviate the sting of failure. They commiserated in private how they felt as they once again were illuminated from championship contention. They simply got tired of what Kobe/Gasol and the big 3 did by stacking the deck and playing for all the marbles every year. Especially Kobe who didn't deserve anything, and I am sure Shaquille Oneal let them all know why. Read the article CHICAGO TRIBUNE/James spurns home for South Beach <> As a lifelong Cleveland sports fan, it is hard not to be upset right now. However, who didn't see this coming? He wears a Yankee hat at an Indians game and mingles with the Cowboys at a Browns game. His loyalty was never with Cleveland, it was with Akron.
Here's to another 15 years of irrelevant Cleveland sports! Read the article ESPN/LeBron James announces he'll sign with Miami Heat <> Why the heck does LeBron "owe" Cleveland or is some how betraying them? What other sports star is required to play in his home town? How many actually do? By that logic Wade is "wrong" for not choosing to go to Chicago when he had the chance, or Paul Pierce is "wrong" for playing for Boston instead of his native LA. Even Kobe should be playing for the Sixers. -- its idiotic, James stayed in his home town for his whole career but now he doesn't have the right togo elsewhere? Its just sports people. Read the article DAILY BEAST/LeBron signs with Miami Heat <> This is absolutely mind-boggling to me. LJ is not only a free agent, but he is most importantly a FREE MAN. Therefore, he had every right to choose exactly where he wanted to go with his talents. He did not OWE Cleveland anything - I am certain that he helped bring more revenue to that city during the 7 years he played there than any other player in the last 25 years. He worked hard for them and earned his pay. I do not feel sorry for Cleveland. LJ is a 25 year old athlete who deserves to do whatever he wants in order to make himself and his family happy. The young man has kept his nose clean and stayed out of trouble. Hence, to LJ, I say - "Do your thing!" RINGO AT 70 STILL NEEDING LOVE AND PEACE
Peace and love are great ideas, Ringo, my fellow drummer. If I may, here are additional suggestions for equally good wishes: jobs and fair treatment by employers for all people; justice and complete compensation for all human and animal victims of the Gulf oil spill; mutual tolerance and respect between and among all religious believers and nonbelievers; and silence and more silence from conservatives and liberals so that we can all enjoy the summer. Happy 70th, Ringo! Read the article NEW YORK TIMES-ARTSBEAT/You Say It's Your Birthday? Help Ringo Starr celebrate when he turns 70 <> The epitome of cool--like James Dean or Jean Paul Belmondo--and still classy to this day. Not many Pop idols can or will achieve the nirvana of cool. You see, even Richard Starkey's nick is--cool! It could be "Dick" as in Cheney, or "Rick" as in rickrolled but that is def not cool. Bono, Sting, Lady GaGa, Madonna, etc., all nick wannabees are all underlings and will be mostly forgotten by the time that they turn 70. Way to go Ringo and happy birthday! JUNE 28, 2010 -- JULY 4, 2010 LARRY KING HANGS UP HIS SUSPENDERS
Larry's greatest talent is that Larry interviews his guests, rather than interrogate them, and Read the article HUFFINGTON POST/Larry King ending 'Larry King Live" <> Larry King invented the teleprompter, the first one was a clay tablet. Read the article HUFFINGTON POST/Larry King ending 'Larry King Live <> I used to relocate every two years due to my career and never knew anyone right away. Sometimes I would feel so lonely until I tuned in to "LARRY KING LIVE" every night at 9. No matter what changed in my life, or our world, we could always count on Larry to be there. Thank you for your style, grace, class, humor, intelligence............and mostly your heart! Read the article CNN/LKL - Celeb friends call Larry
I personally don't get the hype about her music. I tried to listen to her album and her songs, but it's just shallow dance/electronic music, and yet everyone is pulling it off as if its deep and profound? Everyone is trying so hard to make her out as if she's a true artist, and yet you have to constantly defend her and give us a check sheet of what school she went to, what instrument she played, what her music video means, and so on. If she was art, you wouldn't need to explain it! And if she was talented, she wouldn't have to try so hard to stay relevent. I believe this woman can do great things but she's letting the image, the gimmick, the costumes (well, nowadays, the lack there of), and just the overall shtick get to her head. Read the article CNN/hHas Lady Gaga gotten your attention yet? <> Never ceases to amaze me when people claim Gaga has no talent. Do some research on Youtube for her acoustic versions of her songs, she has an AMAZING voice, plays piano (juliard offered her admission when she was 11), and writes her own catchy pop songs, nothing serious, at least not yet, but they are massively popular around the world. Unlike other auto-tuned pop singers (see Taylor Swift, Britney, Miley, Kesha, Janet Jackson, the list goes on and on) Gaga's got a real voice. Is it kdlang quality, no, but it's better than many. She's massively confident and quite fearless, and never speaks badly about anyone. Her detractors can learn a few lessons from Gaga, she's one of the most positive role models out there in the music business. And no, I'm not 16, but closer to 50!
