MALAWI GAY COUPLE'S DRACONIAN 14-YEAR JAIL SENTENCE

Steven Monjeza, 26 and Tiwonge Chimbalanga, 20, Nyasa Times, Malawi

I logged on here to gauge reaction inside Malawi to this judgement. I am extremely shocked that so many, who clearly hold religion and God’s word so highly, are in favour of such harsh punishments and many would delight in see these men put to death! Your attitude as individuals and as a nation is deeply disturbing and not at all Christian.

Men compete, fight and kill each other and that seems ok but they are never allowed to fall in love! All these two men wanted was to be left alone to be happy. Yet look at the joy on the faces of those people behind them in the photo knowing the most precious thing in life had been taken away from them.

Tolerance and respect are the Christian way not hatred and killing!

Shame on Malawi and its people.

I don't understand what outsiders are trying to say and what their rationale is. If you are gays be gays in your countries. This is not acceptable in our society. Even when these guys were doing it they knew of the consequencies of the act. And your involvement really shows you were behind them .How can you tamper with other family affairs? Stop this nonsense, please and we should hear it no more.

This inhuman sentence will have a profound effect on the aid Malawi receives from the West. Gay men and women in the US do not want our money being used to
support this disgusting abuse of human rights.

RONNIE JAMES DIO, THE POLITE POWERHOUSE OF HARD ROCK

Ronnie James Dio from Heaven and Hell during a concert in Katowice Spodek 20 June 2007. via Wikipedia

An ASTOUNDING voice, in my mind second only, maybe, to Bruce Dickinson for all time best in metal. More importantly though, he was a class act, always giving, polite, and humble: All too rare among the towering egos and self-indulgence of the "Rock Star" lifestyle.

In the heat and the rain
with whips and chains
To see him fly, so many died
We built a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
To see him fly, but we don't know why
Now where do we go?

A small man with Big Vocals..
Rock and Roll has lost another ...
Gone to the Final Concert... RIP

The loss of our hometown hero strikes a particularly hard blow to the memories and ongoing aspirations of the local musicians here where Ronnie grew up. Since the days of "Dio at Domino's" on South Main Street, his talent and plainspoken decency set a classy example for generations of players of every stripe. Far from retiring, the voice continued to raise the bar for all singers, elevating his take on the Metal genre to operatic heights.

Local lore contains a treasure trove of Dio memories (my overbearing Italian mother once tossed him out of my sister's slumber party) but now we will have to accept the final curtain. His enormous musical legacy transcends genre typecasting and gives credence to Pavarotti's statement: "A life in music is a life beautifully spent." RIP Mr. Padavona - we can hear your echo.

THROUGH STORMY WEATHER WITH LENA HORNE

Lena Horne from the film Till the Clouds Roll By. via Wikipedia

STORMY WEATHER - YOUTUBE

I can clearly recall meeting the magnificent Ms. Horn when I was but a mere child of 12 - there she stood graceful and elegant as ever - and my Mom introduced herself and then me... and I looked up into the most beautiful eyes I had ever seen - and they belonged to a woman of color!

Not like the baby blues I had become accustomed to seeing in magazines, movies, tv-land, etc. No these were eyes that had seen racist hatred and depths of sadness not to be imagined by any one who was white - My mother is white and My father was black - He worked in the industry with Ms. Horn and she remembered him and his struggle and fought diligently throughout her lifetime to change the way things were - and she managed to change many things.

I will always be grateful for her efforts for and on behalf of us incredible women of color as well all stand on her grand shoulders from this day forward.... I miss you already Lena and will always love you... RIP...

My dad compared every Black woman he saw on television to Leona Horne. From Dionne Warwick, Nance Wilson, Dianne Carroll, even Halle Berry. He compared their voice, their looks, everything to whether they met the Leona Horne standard. He was never rude about it or unkind but if he went silent too quickly, well that woman failed.

One of my favorite Lena Horne moments was seeing her in The Wiz singing “If You Believe” with the children as cherubs all around her, that moment was worth the entire movie.

Also, growing up whenever I read about Lena or saw a television interview she would always referred to “her people”, she took a lot of pride in being African American and as a kid that really made me feel good about myself.

Ninety-two years old is not a bad way to go, Lena. Yours was a life well lived, well done Lena and truly, rest in peace.

I am so, so, sad about Lena Horne's death. I'll miss The Lady, and her music.

I loved the line in her one-woman Broadway show, "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" where she says, "I can out-act Diana Ross, Ruby Dee..." and she continues the list of every major black and white actress of the 70's thereby taking to task Hollywood studios for doing her wrong.

To this day Lena holds the record as having the longest-running one-person show in Broadway history. Still, she never quite got the acting recognition she deserved (no Oscar, no Golden Globe, etc.), because as the Times obituary noted, she was born 40 years to early.

Still, no one could sing with raw emotion, passion and yet reveal the nuances of her talent like Lena Horne. Read the article NEW YORK TIMES/Two classics from Lena Horne

WHIMSICAL, WONDERFUL LYNN REDGRAVE REMEMBERED

Lynn Redgrave, Photo, Anabel Clark, courtesy Lynn Redgrave Official Site, http://www.redgrave.com/

LYNN REDGRAVE OFFICIAL SITE

I am deeply saddened by the news of Lynn's loss to breast cancer. I am a make-up artist in the motion picture film industry who met Lynn and had the privilege of doing her make-up for "The Weight Watchers Magazine Show in the mid-eighties and continued working for her the next several years on Weight Watchers commercials.

I was given my first on-set film experience as a "star request" of Ms. Redgrave's on "Morgan Stewart's Coming Home" with John Cryor. Lynn was so good to me and one of the most pleasant clients to work with-----to date! Lynn's kind and generous nature opened the doors for me to experience a successful career as a make-up artist that has spanned over 25 years.

I have such fond memories of working with her and pray divine peace to her entire family. She was a beautiful person inside and out!

I was fortunate enough to see Lynn Redgrave here in Tucson, Arizona in "Shakespeare For My Father" several years ago. She signed my program for me and then a few months later I was in Seattle and saw that she was performing the same one woman play again.

I went and at the end of the performance I handed her a bouquet of flowers. She plucked one out and put it on the stage in front of her father's picture. About two weeks later I received a card with the note "Fancy you coming to see the play again and thank you for the flowers". She seemed genuinely surprised that someone would want to see that incredible play twice. I would have gone many more times given the opportunity.

IT'S TIME FOR THE CHOSEN 100 of 2010

Time Cover, The 100 Most Influential People in the World

The list is long on singers, movie and tv stars, pseudo-celebrities like Palin, sports figures, and talk-show hosts. I believe no scientists are on the list. There are a lot of other glaring omissions, but that one really knocked me over. Time managed to compile a list that accurately reflects our fabulous American values.

Decades ago, I went to the World's Fair in New York where the American pavilion was pretty much a monument to pop culture. My dad was furious, because the Russian pavilion just shrieked technology and this was right at the height of the Cold War. Methinks the progress of American civilization since then has a great big bunch of more of the same.

Ah, the "influential" label. Some creepy people are on this list, that's for sure. It is not an award of goodness. If it were the 1930's, that horrible shrieking man with the weird mustache would have been on this list.

The inclusions, exclusions, order placed, and categories make no sense whatsoever.

Palin & Beck in the "Leader" category with Obama and the president of Brazil and both ahead of General McChrystal?

Ashton Kutcher and Robert Pattison under "Artist" ahead of Elton John and James Cameron?

Ben Stiller under "Heroes?"

And where the heck is Jon Stewart?!!

Whatever the editors of Time are smoking these days, I want some.

Gaga performing on The Monster Ball Tour in Burswood Dome, United Kingdom, photo Michael Spencer, via Wikipedia

I completely agree with this article and to those of you complaining that Lady Gaga was chosen the most influential artist, get over it, because no matter how much you complain, it won't change anything.

She won it for a reason. To you, she might just be some pop star, but to those of us who voted for her, she's a lot more than that. Her message is to be proud of who you are, & she's the reason that millions of her fans have been able to accept who they are. Sure, they shouldn't need someone for that, but that's easier said than done for some people.

LAURA BUSH SPEAKS FROM THE HEART

If a political couple is still married the public expects the spouse writing the book about the other spouse's political career to defend his/her actions when they were in office.

I don't believe Dems should roll over and play dead when Republicans pull dirty tricks. Taking the high road can often when the other side plays hard ball is stupid.

But...

This book is not going to change any minds because what is written is what most Americans would expect.

Laura Bush's book is not going to erase the terrible effects of Katrina, the deficit, the tanked economy, the war in Iraq, from the public's mind.

We Dems have a chance to appear gracious. Doing so will win us points among independents, who tend to hate partisan politics.

Diaries like this one only make us look bad.

Given the choice between "appearing gracious" and rebutting more Bush Administration whitewash, I'm comfortable with choosing the rebuttal side.  When someone puts themself into the public domain in some way - like, by writing a book - they're fair game for any critique, comment, etc.

I have to admit it's comical reading the so-called Conservatives comments. They talk about partisan politics while being partisan in their responses. Ironic!

Funny how in defending Laura Bush, who btw the way having served in the Marine Corps at the White House under both the Clinton and Bush administrations, I can say was honestly was a great woman.

I liked her a lot, even though I couldn't stand her husbands policies.

The problems with partisans, is that you cling to the talking points of your favorite media outlets like clothing, never letting humanity connect with reason.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this current President or First Lady any more than the previous two, with the exception of Hillary Clinton, I'm sorry but I just didn't like her.

That being said, once you strip away the programing you will see that these are real people with different ideas. Some you may like, others you may not, etc.

But if you let the media lead you, you will begin to attack these human beings for nothing more than their beliefs.

I had the great opportunity of meeting Ms. Height while preparing for President Clinton's second Inaugural.

She had to deal with security like anyone else, so I was asked to facilitate an appointment for her. She said "Son, what's your name?" and after I responded, she said "My name is Dorothy....I'm embarrassed by all this help you're giving me." I told her "M'am, my mother has been telling me about you since I was this tall....I know who you are."

She was just the sweetest and most humble person you could meet (most great people are) and I'm honored for the short 10 mins I shared with her.
